Bernard “Jack” Griffin Obituary

Bernard John “Jack” Griffin, age 88, of Pierce Township, passed away peacefully at his home on January 5, 2025 after a long illness. Jack was born to the late Bernard and Mary Griffin ( née Connelly ) on February 5, 1936 in Oakley on the east side of Cincinnati. Jack graduated from Purcell High School in 1954 and from Xavier University in 1958. Jack started his career as a Certified Public Accountant and then served as an appeals officer for the Internal Revenue Service for 34 years before “switching sides” and ending his career in private practice for the firm of Mellott and Mellott. He was a frequent speaker for the Ohio Society of CPAs and numerous accounting and tax continuing education programs. Jack was also adjunct professor at almost every local college, teaching several accounting and tax classes at University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, Miami University and Central State.

Jack was a friend to everyone and he would strike up conversations with each and every person he met, much to the chagrin of his children. Putting everyone’s needs and wants ahead of his own, he was always asking others if there was anything he could do for them. He especially loved to help people of all ages with their tax issues.

In his spare time, Jack was a member of the Cincinnati Garden Railway Society, sharing his G scale garden railroad with people from everywhere during their club tours.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, beloved uncle and namesake Jack Connelly and dear cousin Karen Connelly.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Kathleen “Kathie” ; three sons Greg (Kelly), Andrew (Jenny) and Nathan Griffin, daughter Monica Tucker (Jason); his grandchildren, Megan, Shannon, Sean, Ryan, Joey, Hannah, Patrick and Daniel; Cousins Pat Connelly, and Sister Kathryn Ann Connelly; and numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jack’s memory to Purcell Marian High School, the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of one’s choice.
